Language and Communication at Newcastle University

November 30, 2024

As an international student, English is not my first language, and I still don’t consider myself fully fluent. While I understand that lectures are delivered in English, I’ve found that some professors have very strong accents, which makes it harder for both international students and native speakers to follow along.

I once attended a two-hour seminar where it felt like the entire session was conducted in Spanish—I couldn’t understand anything. It was incredibly frustrating. I believe the university should invest in providing accent training or pronunciation workshops for lecturers with heavy accents.
