About the Walden University
Located in Minneapolis, Walden University is a private for-profit online university for bachelor’s, master’s, doctoral, and specialist degrees. Adtalem Global Education has owned Walden University since they purchased it back in August 2021. Walden University is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission.
Walden University has its roots going back to 1970 by two New York teachers Bernie and Rita Turner. They wanted to create a program for working adults/teachers to wanted to pursue doctoral degrees. The first classes took place in 1971 in Naples, Florida, focusing primarily on school administrators.
In 1972, Walden gave out its first degrees (43 PhDs) and 2 EdDs at its first commencement in Naples. In 1979, the Minnesota Higher Education Coordinating Board granted the license to pass out PhDs and EdDs in the state. In 1982, the school moved its headquarters to Minneapolis and it has been there since.
